Saputo implements unconscious bias training to create a more diverse and inclusive workforce

We believe in the value of fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it also leads to a more engaged and productive workforce. Recognizing our unconscious biases is key to a truly inclusive workplace.

We understand that unconscious biases may impact our everyday decisions, actions and behaviours. This may impact recruitment and promotion practices or limit creativity and innovation. Learning to identify biases and developing the right tools to reduce their impact on our day-to-day decisions are an important opportunity for improvement in this area.

With this in mind, Saputo deployed unconscious bias training courses to management employees – from Plant Managers to Presidents, across Canada, Argentina and the USA. Our leaders took part in exercises to increase awareness of individual biases and their impact on decision-making, creating an opportunity to drive change.

Since implementing the training, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Over 90% of participants found it to be highly applicable and useful in their daily role and would recommend it to a colleague.

Building on this success, Saputo has plans to extend the course to new markets such as Australia and the United Kingdom to a broader base of employees in the USA.

Saputo recognizes that addressing unconscious biases is a continual process, and to make a lasting impact, we need to foster a work environment that encourages open and honest dialogue. It is our intent to have more employees participating in the training as we continue our journey.
